For three days, Spring Communities brought together children and adolescents aged 10 to 18 in the Busuma Congolese refugee camp for artistic and creative workshops entitled Art For Healing. This initiative happened within the Child-Friendly Space established with the support of UNICEF Burundi, which welcomes more than 600 children every day and was were designed to promote self-expression, confidence, and resilience through art.
Participants took part in several workshops led by committed artists and trainers: drawing with Shakabwa Chance, acrobatics with Vianney Hatungimana, and dance sessions led by Illanga Frank Norbert, whose presence particularly inspired the young participants. Through his energy, experience, and artistic approach, he encouraged young people to use dance as a means of expression and self-empowerment.
The event concluded with an artistic showcase entitled ISANGE, under the theme “Art as a Tool for Resilience.” This celebration gave young participants the opportunity to present their talents through artistic performances, demonstrations, and creations developed during the workshops.
Beyond the artistic activities, ISANGE served as a space for sharing, listening, and valuing young voices in a context where creative activities play an important role in the psychosocial well-being of refugee children and adolescents.
“Thanks to this activity, I learned how to express my emotions differently.” — Participant, 14 years old
Through this initiative, Spring Communities and UNICEF Burundi continue to promote safe spaces where art becomes a tool for resilience, personal growth, and hope for young people.
