In an effort to educate and inform young people on critical issues, Spring Communities, in partnership with UNICEF Burundi, organized training workshops for sports coaches in August. These sessions aimed to use sports as a strategic tool in preventing unwanted pregnancies, as part of the ESBAJ – BURUNDI BW’EJO project, funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Through sports and by using the “Le Monde Évolue Avec Moi” module, this project seeks to raise awareness among young people about issues related to sexual and reproductive health. By integrating sports techniques into this educational program, the workshops aim to transform sports coaches into key players in preventing pregnancies among students.
During the month of August, training sessions were held in five priority provinces of Burundi: Bujumbura Mairie, Rumonge, Muyinga, Gitega and Kayanza. A total of 246 sports supervisors benefited from this skills strengthening. These trainings were designed to provide them with the necessary tools to disseminate the lessons of the module and encourage preventive behaviors among young people.
Anticipated Impact
By equipping sports supervisors with knowledge and adapted strategies, the project aims to make sport an effective vector for raising awareness. Young people, often more receptive in an informal and dynamic setting, will thus be able to better understand the issues of reproductive health and measures to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
This initiative represents an important step towards a more informed and responsible future for Burundian youth, highlighting the essential role that sport can play in education and prevention.
